Why?

I've been practicing the art and skill of upholstery for about two years now. I am a member of the National Upholstery Association, and continue to learn new skills through foundations courses with The Funky Little Chair.

We live in a consumeristic culture. It is much easier to throw things away and buy new than take care of what we have. We consume one thing until we are tired of it, then we toss it aside to consume something else. It is unquestioned to "get rid" of something, or "just throw it away". But what is worth redeeming? What is worth a second chance, with a little investment? What storied artifacts could live on, if we made a different choice?

When it came time to name my business, the words below kept reappearing in my mind. I settled on "Redeemed" because there is always redemption for the broken, tired, and beaten down. We just have to reach out for it. In my life, that means reaching out to Jesus Christ. I may not be able to redeem a life, but I see the beauty and possibility in every piece of furntiture that comes into my shop. I chose the word "Relic" because we often see old furniture as a relic of the past, and frankly kind of useless. The pieces that we hang onto, because they were grandma's, or had some other significance in the past, need to be brought out into the light of day so they can perform their purpose. They CAN be used, with a little effort. Our predecessors wouldn't want their stuff clogging up our basements, they would want to see us enjoying what they left for us.

I hope to inspire a little change in my corner of the world. To encourage those I am blessed to work with, to preserve a piece of their story for the next generation.
